Athénaïs de Béru
Château de Béru
Béru, Chablis
Château de Béru, a historic estate owned by the family of the Counts of Béru for more than 400 years, stands in the middle of the vineyards overlooking one of the most beautiful slopes of the Chablis region, in the heart of the village of Béru and benefits from a unique terroir.
In 2006, after a life in Paris in finance, Athénaïs de Béru took over the 15 hectares of vines of the family property, which she quickly converted to organic, and then in 2010, to biodynamic.
The vineyard is composed of a central core, the Clos Béru Monopole, a unique terroir, enclosed by historical walls built in the 13th century. The other parcels (Montserre, Côte aux Prêtres, Orangerie) are located around the hill of Béru and form a mosaic of limestone soils at an altitude of about 300 meters.
Athénaïs works to maintain the balance of its exceptional soils by reinstating horseback plowing in the vineyards, by totally prohibiting the use of herbicides and by eliminating the systematic use of fertilizers. His practices force the vine to plunge its roots deep into the soil.
