Famille Coulon
Champagne Roger Coulon
Vrigny, Champagne
The Coulons, a family from Vrigny in the mountains of Reims, have been in the vineyard for 8 generations! The domain, of about 10 hectares, is spread over 5 villages with 100 parcels classified as Premier Cru. Éric and Isabelle Coulon work according to the principles of sustainable viticulture, respecting the environment and biodiversity: grassing, use of ploughs, preservation of the natural elements of the soil, control of yields, fight against erosion… To go even further in their approach, they have set up an agroforestry viticulture with the aim of granting their soils a self-sufficiency where fauna and flora contribute to each other to make the vine “happy and alive”.
Their estate is composed of 40% pinot meunier, 30% pinot noir and chardonnay, with an average age of the vines approaching 40 years and planting by massal selection, without clones, to keep the original temperament of the grape varieties. In the cellar, grape varieties and plots are vinified separately for a better “reading” of the terroirs, in stainless steel tanks for the majority of the wines, the oak barrels being reserved for the chardonnay and the reserve wines. In spring, the blending takes place, a fundamental step to express the typicity of the Champagnes.
